Itraconazole 100mg (Generic Sporanox)

• Itraconazole is a synthetic triazole antifungal agent, is used for treating fungal infections caused by fungus, which can invade any part of the body including the lungs, mouth or throat, toenails, or fingernails.
• Itraconazole is used for serious fungal infection such as Blastomycosis, Histoplasmosis, and Aspergillosis. Blastomycosis can affect the lungs, bones, and skin. Histoplasmosis can affect the lungs, heart, and blood. Aspergillosis can affect the lungs, kidneys, and other organs
• The drug is also prescribed for onychomycosis, which infects the toenails and fingernails. Additionally, Sporanox is used against fungal infections in people with weak immune systems, such as AIDS patients.
• Sporanox oral solution is used to treat candidiasis (fungal infection) of the mouth, throat, and gullet (esophagus), and for other fungal infections in people with weakened immunity and fever.
• It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

• Be sure to take Sporanox for as long as your doctor prescribes. It will take 3 months or more to cure some infections completely. If you stop taking Sporanox too soon, the infection may return.
• Itraconazole has a broader spectrum of activity than fluconazole (but not as broad as voriconazole or posaconazole).
• In particular, it is active against aspergillus, which fluconazole is not.
• It is also licenced for use in blastomycosis, histoplasmosis and onychomycosis.
• Itraconazole is over 99% protein bound and has virtually no penetration into cerebrospinal fluid. Therefore, it should never be used to treat meningitis or other central nervous system infections.

• The effects of Itraconazole (Generic Sporanox 100 mg) during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. You should not take Itraconazole (Generic Sporanox 100 mg) to treat onychomycosis if you are or may become pregnant. In any event, Itraconazole (Generic Sporanox 100 mg) should not be used during pregnancy if the problem is a nail infection. In other cases, check with your doctor before you take Sporanox.
• Itraconazole (Generic Sporanox 100 mg) appears in breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. If Itraconazole is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding until your treatment with Sporanox is finished.
• CHILDREN
• The safety and effectiveness of Sporanox in children have not been established.

• Take Sporanox 100 mg exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
• Take each capsule with a full glass of water.
• Take Sporanox capsules after a full meal to increase absorption in your stomach.
• To treat yeast infections of the mouth, throat, or esophagus, the oral solution should be swished vigorously in the mouth for several seconds, then swallowed. Take the oral solution without food if possible.
• Sporanox capsules and oral solution are different preparations and cannot be used interchangeably.
• Take all of the Sporanox that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may begin to improve before the infection is completely treated.
• Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with Sporanox. The interaction could lead to potentially dangerous effects. Discuss the use of grapefruit and grapefruit juice with your doctor. Do not increase or decrease the amount of grapefruit products in your diet without first talking to your doctor.
• Store Sporanox at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
• FOR ORAL TREATMENTS OF
• ORAL CANDIDIASIS: Adult: As oral liquid: 200 mg daily in 1 or 2 divided doses held in the mouth for 20 sec before swallowing. Double the dose in resistant infections.
• TREATMENT OF OESOPHAGEAL CANDIDIASIS: Adult: As oral liquid: 200 mg daily in 1 or 2 divided doses held in the mouth for 20 sec before swallowing. Double the dose in resistant infections.
• PROPHYLAXIS OF SYSTEMIC FUNGAL INFECTIONS IN IMMUNOCOMPROMISED PATIENTS: Adult: As oral liquid: 5 mg/kg daily in 2 divided doses.
• TREATMENT OF OROPHARYNGEAL CANDIDIASIS: Adult: As capsules: 100 mg daily for 15 days.
• TREATMENT OF VULVOVAGINAL CANDIDIASIS: Adult: As capsules: 200 mg bid for 1 day.
• TREATMENT OF PITYRIASIS VERSICOLOR: Adult: As capsules: 200 mg daily for 7 days.
• TREATMENT OF TINEA CORPORIS AND TINEA CRURIS: Adult: As capsules: 100 mg daily for 15 days or 200 mg daily for 7 days.
• TREATMENT OF NAIL INFECTIONS: Adult:As capsules: 200 mg daily for 3 mth or pulse therapy with 200 mg bid for 7 days, repeated once for fingernail infections and twice for toenail infections at 21-day intervals.
• TREATMENT OF SYSTEMIC FUNGAL INFECTIONS: Adult: As capsules: 100-200 mg once daily, increased to 200 mg bid for invasive or disseminated infections.
• TREATMENT OF LIFE-THREATENING INFECTIONS: Adult:As capsules: 200 mg tid loading dose for 3 days.
• PRIMARY OR SECONDARY PROPHYLAXIS OF INFECTIONS IN NEUTROPENIC OR AIDS PATIENTS: Adult:As capsules: 200 mg daily increased to 200mg bid if necessary.
• TREATMENT OF TINEA PEDIS OR TINEA MANUUM: Adult: As capsules: 100 mg daily for 30 days or 200 mg bid for 7 days

• Take the forgotten dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule.
• DO NOT DOUBLE THE DOSAGE OF Itraconazole.

• Itraconazole is a relatively well tolerated drug (although not as well tolerated as fluconazole or voriconazole) and the range of adverse effects it produces is similar to the other azole anti-fungals.
• Elevated alanine aminotransferase levels is found in 4% of people taking itraconazole
• Small but real risk of developing Congestive Heart Failure
• The cyclodextrin that is used to make the syrup preparation can cause diarrhea.
• Side-effects that may indicate a greater problem include: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue, loss of appetite, yellow skin (jaundice), yellow eyes, itching, dark urine, pale stool.
• Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

• Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose you missed and take only the next regularly scheduled dose as directed.
• Do not take a double dose of this medication unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

• Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose is suspected.
• Symptoms of a ketoconazole overdose are not well known but might include dizziness, ringing in the ears, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

• Use alcohol with moderation while taking Itraconazole. Alcohol and Itraconazole can both affect the liver.
• Use caution when driving or performing other hazardous activities. Itraconazole may cause dizziness. If you experience dizziness, avoid these activities.
• Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with Itraconazole. The interaction could lead to potentially dangerous effects. Discuss the use of grapefruit and grapefruit juice with your doctor.
• Do not increase or decrease the amount of grapefruit products in your diet without first talking to your doctor.

• astemizole (Hismanal);
• cisapride (Propulsid);
• pimozide (Orap);
• quinidine (Cardioquin, Quinora, Quinidex, Quinaglute, Quin-Release, Quin-G);
• midazolam (Versed) or triazolam (Halcion); or
• lovastatin (Mevacor) or simvastatin (Zocor).
• Dangerous or life-threatening events may occur if Sporanox is taken with any of the medicines listed above.
• Before taking Sporanox, tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:
• digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps);
• carbamazepine (Tegretol, others) or phenytoin (Dilantin, others);
• rifabutin (Mycobutin) or rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane);
• busulfan (Myleran), docetaxel (Taxotere), vinblastine sulfate (Velban), vincristine sulfate (Oncovin), or vinorelbine (Navelbine);
• trimetrexate (Neutrexin);
• alprazolam (Xanax) or diazepam (Valium);
• verapamil (Isoptin, Verelan, Calan, Covera-HS), amlodipine (Norvasc), felodipine (Plendil), isradipine (DynaCirc), nicardipine (Cardene), nifedipine (Adalat, Procardia), nimodipine (Nimotop), or nisoldipine (Sular);
• atorvastatin (Lipitor) or cerivastatin (Baycol);
• tacrolimus (Prograf);
• sirolimus (Rapamune);
• cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral);
• glipizide (Glucotrol), glyburide (Diabeta, Micronase, Glynase), tolbutamide (Orinase), tolazamide (Tolinase), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), and others;
• indinavir (Crixivan), ritonavir (Norvir), or saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase);
• buspirone (Buspar);
• antacids;
• cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB), nizatidine (Axid, Axid AR), famotidine (Pepcid, Pepcid AC), or ranitidine (Zantac, Zantac 75);
• omeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid), or rabeprazole (Aciphex);
• isoniazid (Nydrazid);
• nevirapine (Viramune);
• methylprednisolone (Medrol, others);
• clarithromycin (Biaxin); or
• warfarin (Coumadin).
• You may not be able to take Sporanox, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above.
• Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Sporanox or affect your condition. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including herbal products.
