  • Herpes infections are contagious and you can infect other people, even while you are being treated with Famciclovir.
  • Avoid letting infected areas come into contact with other people.
  • Avoid touching an infected area and then touching your eyes.
  • Wash your hands frequently to prevent passing the infection to others.

What is Famciclovir (Generic Famvir)?

Famvir (Generic Famciclovir) is an anti-viral drug containing the active ingredient Famciclovir and is used to treat genital herpes, shingles and cold sores. It helps to slow down the spread of the symptoms, giving your body’s natural defences a chance to fight off the infection. Treatment with Generic Famvir should be started as soon as possible after the first appearance of symptoms (e.g. tingling, burning, blisters).

Generic Famvir medication is available in 250 mg and 500 mg tablets; it slows the growth and spread of the herpes virus so that the body can fight off the infection. Famciclovir in Generic Famvir lessens the symptoms of these infections and shortens the length of time you are sick. Famvir medication is not a cure for the herpes virus but helps to reduce the infection and the pain associated with them. Famvir (Generic Famciclovir) is sometimes prescribed for other uses although you should speak to your physician/doctor about this.

Before taking Famciclovir medication?

  • Do not take Famvir if you are allergic to penciclovir (Denavir), Famciclovir (Generic Famvir).
  • Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have:

  • breast-feeding

What if I miss a dose?

What happens if I overdose?

  • Stop taking Famciclovir, and to seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling and the lips, tongue or face or hives).
  • Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Famciclovir, and tell your doctor if you have any
  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, or abdominal pain;
  • headache;
  • dizziness or
  • Tremor.
  • Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about side effects, which seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

The drugs that may interact with Famciclovir?

  • Before taking Famciclovir, tell your doctor if you are also taking probenecid (Benemid). If you are using probenecid, you may not be able to use Famciclovir, or you may need dosage adjustments or special tests during treatment.
  • There may be other drugs that can affect Famvir.
  • Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors.
  • Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.
