What is the most important information I should know Metronidazole (Flagyl)?
- Take this medication is all the time, as per the doctor prescription.
- Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated.
- Metronidazole does not treat viral infections such as flu, or influenza.
- Do not drink alcohol while you are taking metronidazole and for at least 3 days after you stop taking it.
- You may have unpleasant side effects, such as rapid heartbeats, warmth or redness under the skin, tingly feeling, nausea and vomiting.
Metronidazole (Flagyl) side effects?
- Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat.
- Call your doctor immediately if you have any of these serious side effects:
- seizures (convulsions);
- fever, chills, body aches, sore throat, flu symptoms;
- numbness or tingling and hands or feet;
- white patches or sores inside the mouth or lips;
- pain or burning when you urinate, or
- Diarrhea, which is watery or bloody.
Less serious side effects may include:
- nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea;
- headache, dizziness, loss of balance;
- vaginal itching or discharge;
- dry mouth, or unpleasant metallic taste;
- coughing, sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, or
- swollen and sore language.
- This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor of any unusual or difficult side effect.
What other drugs affect Metronidazole (Flagyl)?
- Prior to this medication, tell your doctor if you are using one of the following medicines:
- cimetidine (Tagamet);
- seizure of drugs such as phenytoin (Dilantin), or phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton);
- a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin);
- lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith, and others), or
- disulfiram (Antabuse).
- This list is not complete and may be other drugs that may interact with metronidazole.
- Tell your doctor of all medicines and over-the-counter medicines are used. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products and drugs than other doctors.
- Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.
