Generic Doxycycline is a tetracycline anti-biotic. It kills the bacterial growth in the patient. It
iis used to treats a variety of bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea and chlamydia, periodontitis (gum disease) and many more. It can also be used in combination with other drugs to treat certain infections caused by amoeba. Doxycycline can also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.

What are the possible side effects of Doxycycline?
- Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of any allergic reactions like hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat.
- Stop treatment of Generic Doxycycline and call your doctor immediately if you have any of these serious side effects:
- Severe headache, dizziness, blurred vision
- Fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms
- Severe blistering, peeling, and red rash
- Urinating less than usual or not at all?
- Pale or yellowed skin, dark colored urine, fever, confusion or weakness
- Severe pain in the upper abdomen spread of the back, nausea and vomiting, rapid heartbeat
- Anorexia, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), or
- The easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness
- Less serious side effects may include:
- Trouble swallowing
- A mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or stomach upset
- White patches or sores inside the mouth or lips
- Ulcers or swelling in your rectal or genital area, or
- Vagina itching or discharge
- This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor of any unusual or difficult side effect.
Drugs that inter-react with Doxycycline
- Prior to Doxycycline, tell your doctor if you use any of the following drugs:
- The cholesterol-lowering drugs, such as cholestyramine (Prevalite, Questran) or colestipol (Colestid)
- Isotretinoin (Accutane)
- Tretinoin (Renova, Retin-A, Vesanoid)
- Magnesium, such as Tums, Rolaids, milk Magnesia, Maalox and other
- A product that contains bismuth subsalicylate such as Pepto-Bismol
- Minerals such as iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, and over-the-counter vitamins and mineral supplements
- Blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin), or
- A penicillin antibiotics such as amoxicillin (Amoxil, Trimox, and others), penicillin, Dicloxacillin (Dynapen), carbenicillin (Geocillin), oksasilliini(Bactocill) and other
- This list is not complete and may be some other drugs can interact with doxycycline. Tell your doctor of all generic medicines including over-the-counter ones which are used as existing treatment. Do not start using a new medication without getting medical approvals.
Why should I avoid taking Doxycycline?
- Antibiotic medicines are more likely to cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, contact your doctor for immediate relief. Do not use any medicine to stop diarrhea unless your doctor has told you to.
- Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays (sunlamps or tanning beds). Generic Doxycycline can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight and sunburns. Use a sunscreen (minimum SPF 15) and wear protective clothing, if you are exposed to sun.
- Do not take iron supplements, multivitamins, calcium supplements, antacids or laxatives to 2 hours before or after taking doxycycline.
How should I take Doxycycline?
- Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger quantities, or take it for longer than generic recommended by the doctor. Follow the directions as mentioned on the prescription labels.
- Take generic doxycycline with a full glass of water (8 ounces).
- You can take this anti-biotic with or without foods. Do not take the generic medication with milk or other dairy products, unless your doctor has told you to. Milk products will make the body difficult to react with the medicine. Some signs of Doxycycline may not have limitations on consumption of dairy products. If your doctor has ordered you to take Doxycycline with milk, tell your pharmacist that you need a character that Doxycycline can be taken of milk.
- Do not to crush, break, or open a delayed-release capsule. It is especially made to release medicine slowly from the body. Breaking or opening the pill would cause too much drug to release at one time.
- Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. Make sure that you get the correct dose, it is very important to use measuring spoon or a cup of medicine, avoid using regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
- You can take this medication with or without food.
- Continue the treatment of Doxycycline even though if your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated. Generic Doxycycline is not to treat viral infections such as flu, or influenza. Do not give this medicine to another person, even though they are in the same space you have.
- If you need some type of surgery, said surgeon prior to the time that you are taking Doxycycline. You may have to stop the medicine for a short time.
- Throw away the unused tablets when it expires or when it is no longer needed. Do not take doxycycline period printed on the label. The use of expired Doxycycline can damage kidneys.
- Keep this generic medication at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
Overdose Of generic Doxycycline
Seek emergency medical attention if you suspect that you have used too much of this medicine. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
What happens if I miss a dose of Doxycycline?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, leave the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled. Do not take extra medicine dosage form.
What is the most important information I should know Doxycycline?
- Do not use this generic medication if you are pregnant. It can damage the unborn baby, including permanent discoloration of teeth, and later in life. Generic Doxycycline can make birth control pills less effective. Use a second method of birth control, when you take the anti-biotic keep from having pregnant.
- Doxycycline passes to the infant through breast feeding, and may affect bone and teeth development of a nursing baby. Do not use this medication if you are breast-feeding a baby.
- Do not use this medication if you are allergic to the drug or similar medicines such as demeclocycline (Declomycin), minocycline (Dynacin, Minocin, Solodyn, Vectrin) or tetracycline (Brodspec, Panmycin, Sumycin, Tetracap).
- Prior to the treatment, tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease. You cannot take doxycycline, or you may need doses or special tests during treatment.
- Consumption of doxycycline strictly prohibited to children under the age of 8 years old. The anti-biotic solution can cause permanent yellowing or graying of teeth, and it can affect the child's growth as well.
- Do not take the medicine, after the validity of a printed bottle.
